Mexico Seizes Explosives Cache in Capital After U.S. Tip

Mexico’s military said it seized more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of explosives from a building in Mexico City today after “exchanging information” with the U.S.

The explosives are a type that can be used to demolish buildings, Mexico’s Navy Ministry said in a statement. Four people tied to “organized crime” were arrested at the site, the statement said, without providing more details.

The discovery in the upscale Roma neighborhood comes two days before the city plans to host a World Cup viewing party for as many as 60,000 people in the capital’s main square, known as the Zocalo. About 1,200 police officers will be on hand for the broadcast of Mexico’s match against host team South Africa, the soccer tournament’s first game.

Demolition explosives like those seized today are most likely to be used by criminals to build car bombs or destroy buildings, said Jaime Lopez-Aranda, a researcher at Mexico City’s Center for Research for Development, or CIDAC.
