Overseas Contingency Operation Is The New Global War on Terror

The end of the Global War on Terror, or at least the use of that phrase, has been codified at the Pentagon. Reports that the phrase was being retired have been circulating for some time amongst senior administration officials, and this morning speechwriters and other staff were notified via this e-mail to use “Overseas Contingency Operation” instead.

“Recently, in a LtGen [John] Bergman, USMC, statement for the 25 March [congressional] hearing, OMB required that the following change be made before going to the Hill,” Dave Riedel, of the Office of Security Review, wrote in an e-mail.

  • For God’s sake, people, let’s refer to this struggle for what it is–a long, global war on terror. Calling it the “overseas contingency operation” may, I fear, lull some of us into a false sense of security–that this struggle, while not over, is at least winding down. This is a fight for our lives, not some poilitcal pork-barrel indulgence! May I remind everyone that al-Qaeda will not be satisfied until everyone they consider infidel–especially we “devil” Americans–is lying dead in the streets. I fully plan to be able to grow old alongside my wife, and I deeply resent anyone or anything that may prevent that. To all those who would stop us from fully and completely fighting the global terror threat, I say–well, I can’t say here what I’d really like to say, but I hope you know what I mean.

  • This disgusts me. As someone who has served three tours in the “Global War on Terror”, my beloved GWOT, it is insulting to me to have it rebranded in an attempt to have it sound more politically correct, and to exclude the word “war” from the phrase. People (especially Obama supporters), listen up: We are in a war, a long, grueling, ugly war. Do not think that naming it something prettier is going to make it any less gruesome, or in fact change anything at all. This is a weak publicity stunt and makes me respect the Obama administration even less than I did before.

  • N.Y. Police: Terror Suspects Wanted to Commit Jihad

NEW YORK — DEVELOPING: Four men sought to commit jihad when they plotted to bomb a Jewish temple and gun down military planes in upstate New York, the New York City police commissioner said Thursday.
    ….

Now, lets see… we can’t call this a “Overseas Contingency Operation” because it’s NY, USA!

I guess it’s just a “NY street crime” because those trucks were on the street.
