Pipeline Inspection Gauge ‘PIG’ Cited As Terror Threat

A pig is a device used by pipe contractors to clean or detect weaknesses in pipelines used for oil and gas, water or sewage. The device gets its name not only because of the acronym for pipeline inspection gauge but because it makes a squealing sound while traveling through a pipeline. Pigs come in various sizes and can travel remotely at high speeds. Contractors routinely use pigs in maintaining their pipelines.

  • The installation of a PIG into water, gas, or any pressurized system is not that simple and would be difficult to do undetected. One would have to valve off an area, cut into the system, insert the PIG and then turn the valves back on. An intimate knowledge of the system flow and pressure are essential to move the device. In a gravity system such as a sewer, insertion of the device would be easier however sewer systems often have short runs that dump into holding tanks and flows run away from building and populated areas not toward them, lessoning the impact of an explosion.
