Liquefied Natural Gas Tankers From Yemen Allowed In Boston Harbor

Interesting story out of Boston. The Boston Herald reports that the U.S. Coast Guard will allow tankers from Yemen carrying liquefied natural gas to begin rolling into Boston Harbor later this month despite elected officials’ fears about the highly flammable cargo originating from a suspected al-Qaeda stronghold.

As the Coast Guard announced the completion of a security plan to allow shipments to safely approach the densely populated local area around the LNG offloading terminal in Everett, House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo vowed to enlist members of Congress to explore “other options” to stop the shipments and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino blasted the Coast Guard’s decision.

“I am disappointed by the decision to allow the shipment of LNG from Yemen and believe that this is the wrong decision,” Menino said in a statement. ‘’It is unreasonable and unsafe to continually put the interests of large corporations ahead of the security of Boston area residents, and it is time to solve this problem once and for all.”

Gov. Deval Patrick stated he felt satisfied with the security measures in place for when tankers from Yemen carrying liquefied natural gas begin arriving in Boston Harbor later this month.

The Coast Guard’s decision to allow LNG tankers from Yemen into Boston Harbor comes despite concerns about the country supporting terrorists.

“I’ve spoken with the senior-most people at homeland security, and they have taken it all the way up the chain to the White House national security advisors. I think that everything that can be done has been done. They have taken a whole host of new and more intrusive security measures, and that is what all of us are looking for,” said Gov. Patrick.

Yet Boston Mayor Thomas Menino blasted the Coast Guard’s decision.

He issued a statement that read in part: “I am disappointed by the decision of the United States Coast Guard to allow the shipment of LNG from Yemen and believe that this is the wrong decision for the people of Boston and the metropolitan area. It is unreasonable and unsafe to continually put the interests of large corporations ahead of the security of Boston area residents and it is time to solve this problem once and for all.”

  • In regard to “Liquefied Natural Gas Tankers From Yemen Allowed In Boston Harbor” Beware of a Trojan Horse. Let’s hope there’s nothing inside the tanker other than liquified gas?

  • Just proves the DOLLAR is more important than SAFETY to some people.
We are at WAR and NOTHING from the enemy should be allowed into our territory….that’s insane!

  • It may be time for idiots like this, stop using LNG. No more “Cooking with Gas: for you, Mr. Mayor. Should be the same for the people in California, who refuse to allow drilling for oil. No more gasoline for you people.

  • Sounds like a politician who speaks common sense for a change.

Why are we as a nation buying energy from questionable sources, American currently purchases (and has for a considerable length of time) from Iran, why?
