Armed Man Arrested At Airport Where Obama Was Leaving

Sunday afternoon, shortly after Air Force One took off from the Asheville Regional Airport, police said an armed man was arrested in the parking lot.

Asheville Regional Airport Public Safety Captain Kevan Smith said 23-year-old Joseph Sean McVey pulled up to an airport car rental agency in a car with Ohio plates. They said he got out of the car and had a gun in full view at his side.

Airport police immediately arrested him.

Police say the suspect was never near Air Force One, and President Obama was never in any danger.

McVey is now charged with carrying a weapon in terror of the public, which is a misdemeanor.

He is currently in custody at the Buncombe County Detention Center.

The President and First Lady spent the weeekend in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It’s still unclear if the suspect knew the president was at the airport.

Police also say the McVey’s car had strobe lights similar to those found in patrol cars, but he is not affiliated with law enforcement.

The incident is still being investigated.
