Trace Amount of Explosives Close Meadows Field

UPDATE: Reports now state the substance was honey.

Kern County’s Meadows Field airport was shut down and the terminal was evacuated Tuesday morning after security device detected trace amounts of explosive material on a passenger’s bag.

As of 10:50 a.m., cargo and private flights have been cleared, passenger flights still on hold.

At 10:15, the Sheriff’s Department bomb squad sent a robot into the terminal.

Two Transportation Security Administration agents were doing a routine swab of a piece of luggage when it tested positive for a hazardous substance, Deputy Michael Whorf, spokesman for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, told CNN.

The agents opened the bag, and both became nauseated, Whorf said. They were taken to a hospital.

The owner of the bag, who was not immediately identified, was being detained and questioned, he said.
